Khan was brought up as an Catholic. She was a member of the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church as her elementary school. She said that her grandmother was the one who introduced her to jazz music as a small kid, was the reason for her musical passion. Khan was first exposed to the rhythm and blues while in her preteen years. After turning 11years old, Khan began a group along together with Taka, which is also one of Khan's sisters. in the 1960s, Khan participated in several demonstrations in support of civil rights.
